Simulating Inviscid Fluids with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Kdy: 03/01/2022 18:00 - 03/01/2022 19:30
Kde: Online via Zoom

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a robust numerical method from late 1970s for solving partial differential equations. It has numerous applications, including simulations of fluid waves, volcanoes, formation of galaxies, impact dynamics or fracture growth. One great advantage over typical mesh-based techniques, like Finite Element Method, is that SPH can handle free surfaces and topological deformations with ease. In this talk, we will show how SPH can be used to model inviscid flows. Using handful of tricks, we obtain a scheme that conserves energy and satisfies exact time-reversibility. We will see, however, that dissipation is still inevitable for reasons connected to second law of thermodynamics.
